Coaching

Coaching that starts where the others stopped

For people who have had real success and still have not reached the thing they actually wanted.

You already know what you should be doing. Something keeps stopping you from doing it. That is the part I work on first.

Coaching at Quarry House is for people who have had real success and still have not reached the dream, the change or the transformation they wanted — and for many of them, this is not the first time they have tried coaching.

The short version

Life coaching is a proven method for moving toward your goals. Part of what makes it work is the coach’s skill and training. But the bigger part, the one people underestimate, is the fit between coach and client.

I have the same training most professional coaches have. I add one ingredient most of them leave out: the Spirit.

Spirit first

I have been coaching at Quarry House since 2011 — fifteen years. My clients come from business, technology, the arts and ministry. Most of them had already succeeded at something before they arrived. Most had worked with another coach first.

In 2021 I took the time to ask many of my past clients a direct question: why did this work, when the last one didn’t? The answer almost always came back to the same place.

“The steps to success are well known. They work, when they are followed persistently. So why do so many people still fail — and then blame themselves for it?”

In my experience the cause is rarely the plan. It is something in the person’s own spirit: a tender place, or a belief about themselves that simply is not true, waiting at the hard spot. Most coaching walks straight past it, or touches it once and moves on.

I deal with that first. Then we do the grunt work — and the grunt work tends to go a great deal better.

What the work actually looks like

  • One to one. Always. In a safe, empowering environment where you can be honest about the hard spot.
  • A process, tailored. I use a Maxwell Leadership process, shaped around you rather than a mould you are asked to fit.
  • Weekly or bi-weekly. Regular interaction, and real accountability between sessions.
  • In person or on video. Face to face if you are local to Vermont; by two-way video anywhere else in the world.

How I take on clients

I hold my client list to a small, exclusive group, because focused attention is most of what you are paying for. Even when I am not taking new clients, I will still talk with you for free.

“I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. Not yours and not mine.”
